Flynn PTO Update 8/22/13

Hey There Flynn families - Hope you survived our crazy Vermont weather this summer and are re-energized for the new school year.  Final reminder, school starts on Wednesday!  Like all Wednesdays this year, students will be released at 1:50 on the first day - be ready!

Annual Back to School Potluck this Monday from 5:30-7 at St. Joseph's school in Burlington.  Come and reconnect, break bread and take a peek at the 1/2 classrooms temporarily located at St. Joe's.  The PTO will provide dishes, watermelon and hydration - YOU bring a potluck dish to share.  Please make a note of what your food is, if it is vegetarian friendly/gluten free friendly/nut free or vegan - this helps all families navigate the food line...

Help needed in the Main Office  If you have a little bit of time to spare Monday or Tuesday, there are a variety of tasks that need to get done to help the first day/week go smoothly - tasks include photocopying, binding and tidying up in the resource room.  Karen Carr is in the main office between 7:30-3.  Stop by to help and/or send her an email at kcarr@bsdvt.org

JJ Flynn Theatre Update We will once again be partnering with the Very Merry Theatre to put on a Spring musical with grades 3,4,5.  Don Wright has offered us 2 choices for shows and we need to lock one of them in ASAP before another school does.  The choices are:   Tom Sawyer or The Lost Prince
Both have a literature connection and are adapted from books by Very Merry theatre.  If your child plans to participate (highly recommended...) please take a minute to read a little about each book and VOTE!  I will keep track of folks I hear from in the next week or so and let you know how families have weighed in.  Please send an email to flynnschoolpto@gmail.com or comment on our Facebook page.  Please only respond if you have a child in grades 3-5 - Thanks!!!
Lost Prince: This is one of the lesser-known novels  by Frances Hodgson Burnett (best known for 'The Secret Garden'). It was written about a hundred years ago, so is free if you have an ereader.

The story is loosely based on fact, but features an imaginary Eastern European country called Samavia. Marco, the young protagonist of the book, has been brought up as a patriot by his father, despite never having been there. He is observant and intelligent, and knows when to be quiet. He becomes friendly with a disabled street urchin known as 'the Rat', who eventually becomes his aide-de-camp when the two boys, in a somewhat unlikely scenario, travel across Europe to give a 'sign' that will start a revolution in Samavia.

Tom Sawyer: The adventure of Tom Sawyer is perhaps Mark Twain’s best and most enjoyable book for younger readers. The book draws on memories of Twain’s childhood on the Mississippi River. Many of the events and characters are taken directly from life. The main character was Tom , he is a mischievous but goodhearted boy. Through his love of adventure and following his imagination, Tom and his friends become involved in many difficult situations. His adventure have a happy ending though to the delight of sympathetic readers.

New Landscaping  Our new Schoolyard Habitat was installed at the front entrance of the school on Friday.  This project was completely donated by Linden Landscaping as the prize in a sweepstakes run during the month of May.  The Schoolyard Habitat program was created by the National Wildlife Foundation to restore wildlife habitat on school grounds.  This new natural area not only provides our school with an aesthetically pleasing entrance but also provides endless learning opportunities such as caring for plants, observing birds at the bird feeders and water feature and incorporating first hand observations of nature into our curriculum.  Linden Landscaping hopes to continue their involvement with Flynn school as we look to create more outdoor learning areas on our campus.  Thank you Linden Landscaping!

Playground Update  Over 30 Flynn community members showed up last Saturday to roll up their sleeves and help build our new playground- it was an amazing community event and we should all feel very proud of our accomplishment.  Most of all, our Flynn School playground is now more accessible to individuals with mobility challenges. When we work together to increase the opportunities for interaction within our communities for people of all abilities, we help change the lens in which we view each other.  We are confident that through their experiences at this new universally accessible playground, children with and without disabilities will have a greater appreciation of each other and they also will have opportunities to develop self esteem, dignity, respect, and tolerance.  Go Flynn!
