Hey There Flynn Families - Hope everyone had a relaxing break.  We're in the homestretch now!

PTO Meeting this Thursday at 6:30pm in the Library.  Please consult the agenda below - Hope to see you there!

JJ Flynn Theatre is wrapping up this year's production of Narnia.  Organizers met to debrief  the play experience and all the statistics will be available soon.  Dvd's are being edited and will be available later this month.  If you forgot to order one, send us an email at flynnschoolpto@gmail.com and we will see if there is still time to order.  The big news is that our 2013 play has been chosen.  Flynn players will be producing Frankenstein next year!

6 more parents for Shift 1 Recess Duty (k/1) 11:15-12:10 (have 2)
7 more parents for Shift 2 Recess Duty (2/3) 11:55-12:50 (have 1)
8 more parents for Shift 3 Recess Duty (4/5) 12:15-1:05 (have none!)

ALSO NEEDED:

Please respond to flynnschoolpto@gmail.com to help - we really need your help!!!!

Talent Show this Friday at 7pm - Come see all our great student talent and refresh yourself with goodies at the 3rd grade bake sale!!!  All proceeds go to help fund the Camp Abenaki overnight trip

5K walk/run this Saturday at 9am to benefit kids with Rett's Syndrome.  Registration is $20 to join the team: Hanna's Hope or donations are happily accepted.  Want more information?  Contact 4th grade teacher, Allison Tinson at atinson@bsdvt.org

5th Grade Bridging Ceremony is planned for June 6th.  Organizers are seeking digital photo files to use in the slide show.  Do you have photos of your child and other Flynn 5th graders spanning the K-5 grades - attach your files in an email to Kate Wheeler at kate@wheeler.com

Flynn Construction Meeting notes are included below if you were unable to attend the meeting prior to Spring break.  Questions?  Contact Graham Clarke at gclarke@bsdvt.org.

The following information is what was shared with 40 parents/guardians at the April informational meeting. Phase One of the construction will begin on June 12. In order to guarantee a timely start to the 2012-13 school year, the last day of school this year for Flynn students is Monday, June 11.  The last two Flynn days will be half-days with students dismissed at 11:30 on Friday, June 8 and Monday, June 11. The  Burlington Kids after school program will end their year with students on Friday, June 8.  Like in past years, come watch our traditional parade out the playground door on June 11 at 11:30 honoring the students and staff who are leaving Flynn.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will begin the 2012-13 school year at St. Joseph's
School on Allen St. near the Sustainability Academy / Barnes.  All students will start and end the day at Flynn School, where breakfast will still be available for all students at the regular time of 7:50. Grade 3, 4 and 5 students will be transported to St. Joe's by school buses with Flynn staff aboard and will leave Flynn each morning immediately after attendance is taken. Students who arrive on time for school will have transportation provided to the St. Joe's campus with the bus company contracted by BSD (that bid process closes in May). However, students arriving late will not have school-provided transportation. Students will return by buses at 2:45.

All kindergartners, first and second graders will spend the entire 2012-13 school year at Flynn School. We anticipate that the grade 3-5 students will be back in their newly reconstructed Flynn classrooms in January, 2013.

We will have an information night and tour for parents/guardians of next year's grade 3, 4 and 5 students at the St. Joe's campus on Allen St. at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 30. Flynn School will have use of 14 classrooms and offices on the main and top floors of the school plus use of the gymnasium for PE classes, the cafeteria and the playground. Lunch will be served to students with some of our Flynn kitchen staff following the same menu that K-2 students will be eating at Flynn School.

Like when the Sustainability Academy used the St. Joe's campus when their building was under construction, it is a three story, mixed-used building with other educational and social service organizations on the bottom and top floors. Flynn students will only use the bottom floor for lunch.  The Flynn office is on the middle floor next to the stairs and we are the only organization on that floor. We also have two hallways on the top floor where a hall monitor will be stationed during the student day. Both buildings will be fully staffed with administration, guidance, nursing and custodial personnel. Like we currently do now, students will be accompanied by a teacher when they move between classrooms for art, music, Spanish etc.

The Burlington Kids after school program will be available for K- grade 5 students at the start of the year and like now, the program will take place at Flynn School.

For 2012-13 all Burlington elementary schools will start at 8:10 am and the student day will end at 2:45 pm, 15 minutes later than this year. This change was announced a few weeks ago and follows a similar extension a few years ago to the middle school student day in an effort to provide more instructional time for Burlington students.

Summer construction will begin with the removal and replacement of the roof deck on the upper elementary and Kindergarten wings of the building. This roof deck was built in the 1950's and contains asbestos. The school district has hired a licensed asbestos abatement company who, working with the VT Dept. of Health, will follow the codes, laws and procedures for the safe removal and replacement of the roof during the first 8 weeks of construction. All asbestos will be removed before students return from summer vacation.

Flynn PTO Update 4/16/12

Hey There Flynn Families - Hope you all had productive chats last week with your child's teacher. I don't know about you, but I am pleased to be offered another opportunity to talk about my child's progress at school.  Just so you know, you can request a conference anytime during the year - you don't have to wait for pre-scheduled dates if you have some issues to discuss with your child's teacher.  If you don't already include your child in the conference, you might want to consider involving your child in some or all of the conference.  Elementary school is a great time to set your child up to be a partner in his/her education.

April Staff Appreciation On Thursday, April 12th, the Kindergarten families treated the Flynn staff with a potluck dinner for staff appreciation during Parent Teacher Conferences.  Thank you to the Kindergarten families who brought in food, drinks, and decorations! A huge thank you especially to Deb Maher for helping with setup and cleanup for the dinner.  Thank you also to the other volunteers who came in to setup.  The dinner was a huge success and the variety of dishes was a great way to thank and show appreciation for our Flynn staff!

PTO PIZZA pickup is Tomorrow! - Tuesday, April 17th from 4:30-6pm - Guess
who's not cooking tomorrow????

Meeting Minutes from the April PTO meeting are included at the end of this blog post.  Thank you Sarah D. for your note taking, word processing and attention to details!

May is Teacher Appreciation Month.  At Flynn we like to recognize all the staff that work together helping to teach and shape the character of our young people.  A memo will be in the Flynn Flyer outlining the needs for our Annual Staff Luncheon on May 11th.  I am including a link to the document if you would like to take a look now - otherwise, check the Flyer.  As always, we will need lots of parent help with recess duty - so far, Staff Appreciation has been sunny and warm and parents have been happy to oversee the kids frolicking on the playground.  Hope you can help!

Flynn PTO Update 4/9/12

Hey There Flynn Families!

Great parent support last week for a myriad of events at Flynn school including the first ever Principal's Coffee, the monthly PTO meeting and the Bookfair and Hot Dog Supper.  Crazy already and then to think they were all scheduled for the same day!  If you missed having coffee and conversation with the Principal, don't fret as you will have another opportunity on April 17th to find out about what's happening at Flynn with the upcoming school construction.

At the first Principal Coffee held April 5th, several parents voiced concern about speeding on Starr Farm Road near the school.  It was suggested that parents call the Burlington Police Department and request that officers be present and/or run radar at drop off and dismissal times.  If you feel strongly about this issue and the safety of our students please call the Burlington Police non-emergency line at 658-2704 and request to speak with dispatch.  The more concerned families that call the more likely we'll see results.
Principal Clarke said the construction update meeting on Tuesday, April 17th at 6:30 p.m. would be a good place to discuss the possibility of adding speed bumps, a crosswalk and signs indicating the area is a school zone and reminding drivers it is state law to stop for pedestrians.  A parking engineer will be meeting with Principal Clarke and touring the property in the next week or so.
Thanks for slowing down and keeping an eye out for our children!

PTO Pizza orders due into the office tomorrow!  Pick-up is next Tuesday, 4/17  Extra forms are in the office and/or contact Tammy Kuypers at kuypers5@yahoo.com   No cooking, no clean-up, fundraising that benefits your child....  What's not to like?

The April Treasurer's Report is available for your viewing pleasure.  Click on the link below: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ag-zi-SCj-zndGMwcHJISk13dEFCc1NwTzQ1NklrUWc#gid=0

The Annual Staff Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, May 11th.  Each year, parents across the grades come together to provide yummy food and recess coverage so all the staff can have a leisurely lunch.  Planning has begun and we will put out some more specific needs soon, but in the meantime, we already know that we will need a large crew of parents out on the playground between the hours of 11:30-1ish.  Ideally, parents sign up so they are out at the same time as their own children - K/1 is the first recess, then 2/3 and finally 4/5.  We are looking for about a 1 hour committment either earlier or later - What say you???  Contact the PTO at flynnschoolpto@gmail.com to inquire.

Hey There Flynn Families - So nice to see so many families at the play- we are grateful for all your support!

Narnia had a great run this past weekend.  We packed the house both nights and our young actors did us proud!  I hope your child enjoyed the show and/or being part of the production.  Our Spring play is a much anticipated opportunity at Flynn.  Great parent support and successful fundraising help make it possible.  HUGE thanks to Sarah Smith for her calm leadership and successful grant writing skills.  I would also like to recognize some other volunteers who provided great leadership to Narnia:  Bella Nadworny for her costuming, Bren Alvarez for her beautifully executed playbill, Melisa Peterson and Jen DeBedout for managing the Greenroom.  We will be compiling a wrap-up report in the coming weeks and it will be made available to parents -stay tuned!

Burlington School Food Project We "heart" Vegetables!
Getting students to eat their vegetables is a constant battle. However, based on a CDC report put out earlier this year through Shelburne Farms and VT FEED, Vermont students are prone to consuming more vegetables that many kids in our country. Although this is dynamite news there still remains room to grow.  The Burlington School Food Project is always finding ways to urge our students to be adventurous in their food choices. We are constantly reaching out and trying new things. For us experiential learning is one of the best ways to get students more involved in their food.
Here is a list of some of our emerging project:

The Burlington High School Greenhouse - Earlier this year Mr. Brian Hoffman, a teacher of science at BHS, offered an unbeatable deal by granting us access to the department's greenhouse. This is a fully functional, glass structure, with automatic sprinklers and temperature sensitive vents. Basically a Farm 2 School dream. With help from Jenn McGowan and her Healthy City crew, as well as City Market volunteers we plan to have the place cleaned out and ready for an April planting. Our goal is to use this greenhouse space to grow healthy starts for all of our district's school gardens. Also by using this space as an educational tool teachers will be able to bring students onto the ground floor of food production. For me this is the most magical part of growing fruits and vegetables and I hope that this experience will cultivate new relationships between our students and their vegetables.

C.P. Smith Heritage Apple Orchard - C.P. Smith, having the space, sun-exposure and proper drainage has become the focal-point for our first ever district apple orchard. This orchard, with the support of principle Thomas Fleury, will house approximately fifteen apple trees of various heritage varieties. Apples play a big role in both the history and landscape of Vermont. Our intent is to offer a space that promotes the examination of both of these topics. In the spring we hope to: break ground, fill site with compost and plant a cover crop in order to ready the ground for tree planting next year. The learning that can be paired with this project is almost limitless.

Our vision includes: community harvest dinners, food-based education curriculum, district-wide field trips, taste-tests, pruning workshops, gardening classes, Vermont storytelling

New Foods coming soon! We have been busy this winter developing new local vendor partnerships. Here is what we have coming your way:
Vermont Bean Crafters Located at the Mad River Food Hub in Waitsfield, Vermont the Bean Crafters will be making: Falafel, Black Bean Crumble, Black Bean Burgers,Hummus
Kingdom Creamery These delicious dairy products come from a family farm in East Hardwick, Vermont. Our schools will be partaking in their rich and flavor-filled non-fat yogurts.
Vermont Soy Company Finally! The USDA recognizes tofu as a source of protein. With that being the case we will now be able to experiment with recipes that include Vermont Soy Tofu

PTO minutes from the March meeting are included at the end of this post.

    Hey There Flynn Families -
Skating at Leddy Arena last Friday night was (as always) a huge success and a huge turnout. More than 87 Flynn families turned out to skate and socialize. Thank you to the PTO for making this a free event, thank you Shanta Eastman for organizing and thank you Tammy, Mary and Kate for taking a turn at signing families in. Happy to report that there were no major accidents and as far as I know, no trips to the emergency room. We had some local celebrities out with their own kids. Spotted skating was Mr. Abbey, Ms. Tinson and Mrs. Burdick!

The March PTO meeting was last Thursday evening.  We've had great parent turnout and continue to plan and organize events to enrich the academic and social lives of your child and family.  It is never too late to get involved.  The minutes from the meeting will be available next week and the Treasurer's Report can be viewed by clicking on the following link:

Narnia is in full swing and both kids and volunteers are ramping up for a busy weekend including a set building day on Saturday (3/17) and Technical Dress rehearsal on Sunday (3/18) starting at 11:30.  We encourage parents and children grades 3+ to come help on Saturday after 8:30am.  Stay an hour or the whole day!  We will have food and drinks to keep you going and as always, fun projects and awesome folks to hang around with!  All actors/actresses need to be at school on Sunday by 11:30am with a bag lunch and a good attitude.  We will run through the whole play on stage and start to add in lights and music.  We'll add the chorus in on Monday and then it's PRODUCTION WEEK!

HELP!!!  We are looking to borrow 3 artificial Christmas trees to use on our set - Do you have one we can borrow or know someone who can help us out???  (grandparent perhaps???)  Please contact Sarah at sarah@esptrans.com - We can come get it!!!!!!
