Please check out the following link to find out more info on how to support the play though Advertising!

FUNDRAISING

Correction:  While the Meadowfarm fundraiser brought in over $3,000 total-this is not what Flynn school earned. We will know our percentage soon! Thank you Happy Vail and Missy Hellyer for organizing! Didn’t buy wrapping paper? Don’t worry...there is still an opportunity to support Flynn with the Pay It Forward fundraiser. Write a check (to Flynn School PTO) and send it in to the office! We are almost to $800! Help us reach our goal of over a $1000!

LOST AND FOUND

Have you been to the Lost and Found already this year?  A good indication that your child's clothes need labels!  Help reduce the pile of Lost & Found items at Flynn School!  Order all kinds of labels through Mabel's Labels and a portion of each sale will go directly to Flynn School PTO!

OCTOBER PTO MEETING

Thank you to all who attended the PTO meeting last week.  Remember, YOU are the P. in PTO!  You are your child’s first teacher, strongest advocate and life-long cheerleader.  Your presence and participation at Flynn School sends a strong message to your child that you value school and academic achievement. Educational research has found that family participation in school strengthens students’ academic success.  Minutes from the meeting will be sent in the next blog post. Thank you to Tammy Kuypers for bringing a pasta dinner to share with everyone!

Thank you to all the volunteers who have offered to take on a leadership position:

BFOE The Burlington Friends of Education will be hosting a meeting on Tuesday, April 8th at 7 pm in the BHS cafeteria to educate community members about how they can assist efforts to pass the next budget.

The specifics and timeline for the next vote are not yet known, but the next vote is likely to occur in early June.  It is critical that supporters of public education in Burlington rally and organize now to avoid the drastic cuts that will result if this second budget gets defeated.

Donations of any size are always welcome to help defray expenses related to advertising and the get out the vote effort that we are currently planning.

Checks can be written to BFOE and mailed to Christopher Hood at 44 Caroline Street Burlington, VT 05401.  Paypal donations can be made by visiting

After the April 8 meeting, the BFOE will send out information and updates so that people can learn how they can help get the next budget passed!

Warmly,

Christopher Hood

We're not the only ones who think Burlington Schools are doing great work. Just read this article from The Atlantic.

PTO Meeting Minutes – April 3, 2014

Meeting was called to order at 6:10 pm.

Heather Simmons facilitated meeting, standing in for President, Jessica Hook.  Minutes kept by Christine Leithead, standing in for secretary Sarah DeShaw.

Kathy Mathis, Family School Partnership coordinator for Burlington School District.  -Annual Title 1 Meeting.
Discussion included what Title 1 means, how schools qualify, presentation of the Burlington School District Parent/Guardian involvement policy, and presentation and discussion of  JJ Flynn’s Home and School Compact.
Parents were made aware that they can give feedback regarding the Flynn Home School Compact.   Information about doing so for this year will be on the PTO blog and at Family Math Night.  Kathy Mathis can also be reached directly at kmathis@bsdvt.org
Homework is one of the items included on the compact.  A question was raised regarding whether or not there is an official homework policy at Flynn.  Parents are interested in seeing one created.
A copy of the Compact is sent home to every family at the beginning of the school year, to be signed and returned.  It is offered in several languages. There was a suggestion to change the form to include a space for feedback.

Principal’s Corner – Graham Clarke was not in attendance.  Information was presented via written handout, with Graham fielding questions via phone.
Because the budget did not pass, Spanish will not be taught in Burlington elementary schools next year.   At Flynn, STEM will be added as a specials class.
New school board will be in place soon – agenda and minutes are available online at the BSD website.
Next Principal’s coffee will be April 17th.

Family School Partnership – Shanta Eastman
Math Night is next week from 5:30-7, with pizza at 6:00 for families who have returned forms.  FSP will be paying for dinner, organized by Mary Dunsmore.
Currently working to survey teachers regarding classroom events to which parents are invited.  FSP created a classroom events scheduling tips checklist which has been adopted by the district.   Family School Partnership has lost its funding due to budget cuts.

Treasurer’s Report – Betsy Ward  - (See treasurer’s report)
Fundraising for the play was very successful.  We’re about halfway to our goal for fundraising for the year.

Fundraising – Tammy Kuypers
Dan’s Chocolates fundraiser is currently happening.   Spring Fest will be on Sunday, May 18th, and will include a fun run, bouncy house and silent auction.   “Gift Certificates” from either businesses or those in the school community with talents/skills are needed for the silent auction.  The Fundraising committee was asked to create a form parents can use to try to solicit donations of gift certificates from businesses.
Next year will be Tammy’s last year at Flynn, so if anyone is interested in fundraising chair position, they could “apprentice” with her next year.

Enrichment – Kim Hunt
The play was great!  There will be a wrap up meeting at Kim’s house, during which, options for next year’s play will be discussed/decided.  Anyone is welcome to come, but please email Kim so she can plan for the right number of people.   There was a suggestion of exploring seating/stage options to hopefully improve visibility of actors for next year.

Flynn Family Nights – Heather Simmons
Plan is to create schedule for next year in advance for improved coordination and planning.

Staff Appreciation –
3rd grade’s goal of buying a popcorn machine for the staff break room was not met, but will hopefully still be able to happen at a later date.
In May, the PTO will sponsor a luncheon for teachers and staff – any volunteers to help please contact Kate Belluche.

Kindergarten Tours and lunch to be offered to incoming families in addition to an orientation meeting with Graham are in the works, and volunteers are needed.   Heather, Tammy and Christine volunteered.

Meeting finished with a presentation about the North Avenue Corridor Study.

Flynn PTO Update 3/9/14

Hey There Flynn Families - So fun to see all the families out on the ice Friday night for our annual Leddy Skate Night.  Thank you so much to all the parents that organized and supported fundraisers this year - money raised by the PTO goes towards free family events like this one.  Skate night alone costs the PTO upwards of $800 for ice rental and skates.

Many thanks to the families that baked, organized pizza, picked up donations, set up/cleaned up the concession area.  We raised over $600 that will go directly into the Tom Sawyer play fund.  Also grateful that everyone had a hearty appetite and made generous donations - Flynn families are the best!!!

Raffle winners at Skate night won Front row seats for Tom Sawyer and VIP Parking.  So far, our winner are the following families:  K. Poquette, M. Rubman, A. Greenip.  Unclaimed tix include: (last 4 numbers) 9690, 9685, 9706...  If you have one of these tickets, shoot me an email! akbelluche@aol.com

(Also - unclaimed plate that once held mini cupcakes - white plate with blue trim - is washed and in the PTO mailbox in the office)

Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-ups  This spring, Flynn will continue to use the electronic scheduling system, PTC Fast, to schedule our March 27th and 28th Parent Teacher Conferences.  It will allow you to select the teacher(s) with whom you would like to conference. By registering your email address, you will be able to view and select a conference time(s) that works for you.
If you have more than one child at Flynn School,  you may begin scheduling your conferences on Thursday March 6th.

Q. What if I need to schedule multiple conferences (more than one child at Flynn)?
A. If you have more than one child for whom you need to schedule, you should select (check) all teachers with whom you need to conference from the list of available teachers. You will then be prompted to  enter the children’s names for the corresponding teachers. When that is done you can proceed with registering your email address.  You will receive a link via email to access and view the teachers’ schedules.  You will see all selected schedules at one time!

http://ptcfast.com/schools/John_J_Flynn_Elementary_School

One Child? Families needing only to schedule a conference for one child may begin scheduling conferences on Tuesday March 11th. Supporting documentation can be found at:
http://tinyurl.com/flynnparentconferencehelp
If you are not able to access this system and need help, please call the Flynn office (864-8478)  to schedule a conference appointment with our administrative assistant, Karen Carr.

Minutes from the PTO meeting last week are included at the end of this post.

The Theatre committee is looking for a few items to borrow for our upcoming production of Tom Sawyer...  Could you lend any of the following?: (if so, write to us at flynnschoolpto@gmail.com)

Suspenders
Train cap
Jean Overalls (size 10 or 12)
Plastic grasshopper, plastic beetle
Pick ax
old kite

BSD Budget Defeated...Spotlight – Superintendent’s Column

Greetings All,
As you are now aware our budget was defeated significantly in this week’s vote. The disconnect between our growing enrollment and investment in quality programs, with an education funding system that resulted in an anticipated 9.9% tax increase (for a moderate 3.9% budget increase) hit the wall and Burlington voters expressed that they could not afford it any longer.
What are the next steps? We will have six new Board Members beginning in April and this Board will determine if we go back out for a second budget vote, and if so, what shall it be? Ultimately, if we have no approved budget by June 30th, we can spend this year’s budget amount plus any additional revenue. This will mean additional reductions of about $2M at the high end.
In the next week, I must prepare a reduction in force list in anticipation of what the Board decides and how we will end up with a spending plan. This likely means there will be many RIFs extended and some positions will likely be recalled this year, but not until late spring. This always causes anxiety and I am very sorry for that. Because of contractual deadlines, we must RIF first and then bring back as revenue is approved through a budget.
I will try to keep you up to speed as to the thinking of the Board. Basically, anything not mandated will be considered for             reduction. There is no doubt there will be an impact on the classroom and on programs. Of course, we will also seek non-program reductions as much as possible. We will get through this together. Please hang in there and ask questions as we go through this process. Thank you for your commitment to the children of  Burlington.
I wish to thank the following Board Members for their years of service and dedication to Burlington’s children as they leave the Board: Kathy Chasan (8 years), Bernie O’Rourke (6 years), Jill Evans (4 years), Rebecca Grimm (3 years), Erin Kranichfeld (2 years), and Linda Deliduka (2 years).
I also wish to welcome the new Board Members who will begin their terms in April: Kyle Dodson (Ward 1), Brian Cina (Ward 2), Charlie Giannoni (Ward 3), Scot Shumski (Ward 4), Stephanie Seguino (Ward 6), and David Kirk (Ward 7).

Book Fair Coming Soon Put the March Book Fair on your radar!  The library is holding a one-night event on Tuesday, March 25th from 5-7:30 pm.  The third grade team is also holding a fundraising dinner. The Library is looking to line up a couple of volunteers to help with set-up (3:30-5:00) and breakdown (7:30-8:30).  Please contact Corey Wallace to help.   cwallace@bsdvt.org

Did you miss the Daylight Savings Bottle Drive?  There is still time to bring those bottles and cans to Merola's Market if you missed the drop off Saturday.  When you stop by just say your donating the deposit to J. J. Flynn School.  The bottle drop will be extended until Wednesday.

Flynn PTO Update 2/9/14

Hey There Flynn Families - I'm back in business with Blogger - found a work around - hope it sticks!

Lost and Found  There is a MASSIVE pile of lost and found at Flynn - not sure how kids "lose" their winter boots, jackets and snow pants in the middle of winter...  Mittens and gloves I can believe, but boots!!!!  Anyway, come take a peek through the pile.  Unclaimed clothing will be donated over the Winter break to make way for new lost and found items that are sure to pile up come March... All items are located outside the cafeteria.

Minutes from the February PTO meeting can be found at the end of this blog post.  An updated Treasurer's Report can be viewed at the top of this page - see tab.

Tom Sawyer Update  Cast and chorus are practicing away and the Stage Crew starts this week making props for the production.  Whether you have a child in the play this year or are just looking forward to the experience in years to come, we have ways you might want to get involved...
  • We could use a few parents/grandparents with sewing skills to work on bonnets - in all we have 41 bonnets to prepare in the next few weeks - if you have basic sewing skills, they are not difficult.
  • We still need fabric for bonnets (small prints, calico, muted colors- old fashioned looking)- the more we get donated, the less fabric we have to buy...  Please respond to this email if you have some to share (1/2 yard is needed per bonnet)
  • There will be a raffle at the talent show for front row seats and VIP parking...  You might want to bring a few small bills to enter the raffle..

Box Tops Please send in all the box tops you have collected!  We can also earn cash for our school online, too! You can shop online through the Box Tops website and earn eBoxTops® credits on all your purchases. Just click the “earn” section at the top of the BTFE.com homepage and scroll down to “shop marketplace.”  Any eBoxTops you earn will be automatically credited to our school. Each eBoxTop is worth 10¢, just like a regular Box Top.

Parenting...  So I am a HUGE fan of Vicki Hoefle (as you may have guessed by now).  We took our first parenting class with her when my kids were 4+6, read her book, Duct Tape Parenting (in our Parent Resource Library in the lobby - can be checked out...) and my husband and I are presently taking her class on Adolescent Parenting.  Another parent asked me the other day why I was taking a parenting class - and remarked that all the hard work was over and the kids were doing fine.  I was surprised by these remarks and told her that in many ways, the hardest parts are now and coming - the launching of young people who are ready to meet the demands of college, living on their own, paying bills, spending and saving money, learning to make decisions, making choices about drugs, alcohol and sex, standing up for their needs...  these skills take years of practice and training.  The parents are the trainers and it takes extra effort to train and guide vs. just doing it for them because they are too busy with school/sports/ extra curricular activities...  The podcast below speaks to this need for training and is really thoughtful.  Contributions are really important in my family and might work into your family as well.  Take a listen...

Podcast: Contributions    In this conversation with Vicki Hoefle, we talk about contributions. Learning how to contribute to thehousehold helps children develop self-esteem and resiliency, qualities that will support them for life. This episode explains how to encourage our children to contribute, including very young children.

Listen below and learn how to invite your kids to participate in the operations of the home. Would you like to quit your job as the maid?

North Avenue Reimagined – by you!
The North Avenue Corridor Study’s second community meeting is right around the corner, and we need your participation during this exciting phase of the project. We’ve collected data, observed the corridor, identified issues, and established a vision. The fun and interactive phase is now launching, so join your friends and neighbors for a hands-on workshop as we begin to develop the improvements that will remake North Avenue into a more walkable, bikeable, and safe corridor for all users. We’ll supply the maps, markers, and information to answer questions; you bring your creativity and collaborative energy!

Join us on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of St. Mark’s Church (1251 North Avenue)! Questions? Call Diane at 865-1794. If you can’t attend or want to learn more visit http://bit.ly/north-ave.
