Hey There Flynn Families - Have a great week - Kate

What to do with old toys from the blog, Unclutterer
Posted: 04 Dec 2012 07:43 AM PST
The winter holidays are coming and, for those who celebrate and have kids, it typically means the acquisition of new toys. It’s great for the kids but becomes problematic when the new bounty is piled upon last year’s. And the year before that. Before long, you’ve got clutter on your hands. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to reduce the mess, keep things tidy, and, best of all, keep the kids happy about it. If you’re looking to part with used toys, the following are several ideas for what you can do with older, outgrown or otherwise unused toys.

Donate

It’s always nice to donate a toy to someone who could use it and there are plenty of options. Here are a few that should be available in many communities for very lightly used toys:
  1. Toy drives. To find a toy drive in your area, contact a local church or chamber of commerce. Organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts also organize drives, so seek them out in your neighborhood.
  2. S.A.F.E. Stuffed Animals for Emergencies. This organization delivers donated stuffed animals, toys, books and blankets to hospitals, children’s services, homeless shelters and hospitals across the country. You can find a chapter in your area here.
  3. Goodwill. Goodwill works to foster employment training opportunities for those it serves. The vast majority of funds brought in through its stores serves that purpose.
  4. Local fire department. Firefighters and EMTs often keep stuffed animals around to give to children they must transport to the hospital. Call the department in your area to see if they have such a program.

Repurpose Old Toys

Repurposing is where it gets fun. You and your child can let your creativity run wild and think of fun and useful ways to repurpose old toys. It can soften the blow that comes with giving something away. Often children can have an emotional bond to a toy they haven’t touched in years. Tricks like these allow them to keep that toy around (or a part of it at least).
Repurposing helps kids (and parents) realize that making something can be more fun than buying. It fosters a real sense of ownership and accomplishment. Finally, you’re keeping a hunk of plastic out of the landfill in many cases. Here are some great ideas for re-purposing old toys.
Website Apartment Therapy has gathered 10 fantastic projects for old toys from around the web. My favorites include:
  1. Plastic toy as planter. This fantastic tutorial shows you how to turn a plastic dinosaur into a cute planter.
  2. Wooden block wall hangings. My wife and I bought so many wooden blocks for my children. At 7 and 9 years old, they’ve lost interest. This quick how-to from snug.studio shows how to turn them into wall hangings for book bags, hats, jackets and more. Very clever.
  3. Animal head toy coat rack. A very clever and useful project from Make: Craft uses the heads of discarded plastic animals to make a good-looking coat rack.
  4. Tree ornaments. When I was very young, my mother cut the plastic animals that hung from the mobile above my crib and turned them into Christmas tree ornaments. They’re still among my favorites (wooden peg puzzle pieces also make great ornaments).
I know that kids aren’t thrilled about receiving clothes as gifts, but it happens. Even I have a T-shirt collection that drives my wife a little crazy. Last year, she had several made into the quilt pictured below that has graced my bed ever since.

Honor the Memory

We often fail to part with things not because of the item itself, but with the memory or emotion it represents. This is especially true as kids grow up. One way to honor the memory without incurring clutter is with a shadow box like these from Lawrence Frames. Add an item or two and discard the rest. The memory is intact, and the clutter isn’t.
I also love this wall decoration made from small, unused toys. What a nice way to let Jr. keep some of the items he loves without letting them form a space-hogging pile.

Sell

You won’t be able to sell all of your old toys, of course. But some vintage toys and collectibles can attract buyers. Before you list your little treasures online, you’ll need to take some photos. A good photo can make or break a sale. Here’s a fantastic tutorial on how to photograph your items for the likes of ebay. And, Thomas train sets are very popular this time of year for sale on Craigslist.

There’s a lot that can be done with old toys. If you can, have your kids take part in the process you choose. They’ll feel a part of the decision and enjoy seeing the toy’s new role.

New Post from Jeanne Collins' blog (BSD Superintendant)
Greetings all!  I hope you had a refreshing break and are ready to tackle the weeks until the next one! We are entering high budget season, with a Finance Committee Meeting last night and additional meetings on Dec. 3, 7 p.m. at Ira Allen and Dec. 11, 5:30 p.m. at BHS, before the Full Board meets Dec. 11, 7 p.m. at BHS to agree on a proposed budget. To create the proposed budget, we analyze everything we do now, starting with classroom services, then support services, and finally the infrastructure that supports the teaching. We look at anticipated budget increases (health insurance is going up 14% next year!), potential tax rate and state funding for education (neither of which is final until late in the legislative season, usually after our vote), and needs or gaps that exist in what we are doing now. The Board has asked me to bring them a 0%, 2% and 4% budget increase from the current year. This means they will need to know what options exist for reductions to get to each level and where trade offs may occur. Naturally, it is hard to think of any reductions, but to get a budget that the community can support, we always need to make changes. After a high budget last year, we need to be very circumspect in this year's proposal.
The Board will decide on a proposed budget for public comment on Dec. 11 and will hold a first hearing on Dec. 18, 7 p.m. at BHS. The second hearing will be Jan. 2, 7 p.m. at BHS, and the final hearing will be at the Jan. 9 Board Meeting, 7 p.m. at BHS. On Jan. 9, the Board is expected to finalize its FY14 budget for the Mar. 5 vote. This is decided early by law, to allow for the printing of ballots, annual reports, and other activities. In Jan. and Feb., we do all we can to get the word out about what is in the budget. As a District, we cannot use public funds to tell people how to vote; however, we can give people facts and encourage them to vote at all. It is very helpful that all faculty and staff know the facts about the budget, as you will be asked by neighbors and parents and can help give accurate information. I will share the facts with you as the budget is finalized. Early voting at City Hall begins the 2nd week of February. Absentee ballots are available to voters who will be out of town or simply don't like the lines at the polls. Let people know of these options - the more people who vote, the more we hear what the community wants.
Also, please join me on Dec. 19, 3:15 p.m. (location TBA) for my first Tea with Jeanné this year. This is a chance for us to get together without an agenda and connect, so I can hear your concerns and share my thinking. This tea will focus on race and equity and diversity, as that is a current and future District focus.

Frankenstein meeting this week Monday at 6:45 in the Learning Center.

Theatre programs at the elementary level take a lot of parent support. Come find out what's in
the works and how you can be part of the team.

As a long term play volunteer, I can tell you that is a lot of work but also so much fun. What happens in the 6 week practice cycle is amazing! It is also a great opportunity to get to know other flynn families.

Flynn Firefly Giving Campaign Flynn school has kicked off its annual giving campaign and the recipients this year are Flynn families in need!  At the schoolwide assembly last Friday, Ms. Lessard's class led the meeting and asked students to send in $1 to help other Flynn families.  Each donor will receive a person cutout to decorate and those paper people will stretch around the school, holding hands in support of all Flynn families.  No family is obligated to participate.  Donations above $1 are always welcome.  Money can be sent in via Home/School folders.  Any family choosing to give on-line via INLU will be recorded and their children will be given a person to decorate.  All INLU donations will be forwarded to this fund.  To date, the on-line portion of this campaign has raised $95 thanks to generous Flynn families.  MANY THANKS!

Common Core is Coming...You may have read in the paper or heard your child's teacher talking about Common Core Standards and how BSD is aligning its curriculum to Common Core Standards.  Wondering what that's all about?  The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort to establish a shared set of clear educational standards for English language arts and mathematics that states can voluntarily adopt. The standards have been informed by the best available evidence and the highest state standards across the country and globe and designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators, so they reflect both our aspirations for our children and the realities of the classroom. These standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to go to college or enter the workforce and that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. The standards are benchmarked to international standards to guarantee that our students are competitive in the emerging global marketplace.

New this year at BHS!!!  YEAR END STUDIES (YES) SESSION

The BHS Year End Studies session concludes each school year by offering all students of the BHS community exciting alternatives for learning. Did you know that our District Superintendant has a blog?  You can subscribe to her blog at  http://collinsj.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/north-avenue-news-november-superintendents-message/   On the right hand side of the page is the sign-up.  Just FYI, part of the November Superintendant's Message is below

Greetings Burlington,
Have you hugged your computer today? At Burlington High School, our 9th graders do just that. The iPads that each 9th grader received in September are changing the way of learning and connecting with material in the classroom and beyond. Students can look up what they don’t know right on the spot, collaborate with peers creatively on projects, and organize their homework and notes without lugging a huge backpack. I even saw a student shoot video at a recent soccer game and have the parents around him ask for an instant replay. The iPads are changing the depth and breadth of curriculum. Check it out for yourselves at WCAX with the video “Bringing iPads to the Classroom”: http://www.wcax.com/video?clipId=7758855&autostart=true.

This summer, to get teachers ready to use the iPads productively in their classrooms, we offered a School Development Institute for a week in partnership with Winooski teachers. We had students attend and share their thoughts with teachers as well. To get a glimpse of that sharing, you can watch a short video at: http://partnershipforchangevt.org/ called “Student Consultants Visit SDI”.

Flynn PTO Update 11/4/12

Hey There Flynn Families - Hope you had a great weekend and took advantage of the extra hour of sleep on Sunday!  Hope to see you this week at the Bookfair and Pasta Dinner!

What's up in the library????  Each week, students come to the library where they are introduced to great books.Children in grades K-4 participate in the Red Clover Award Program, Vermont's children's choice picture book award. Children listen to, read, discuss and vote for their favorite Red Clover nominee each year. Statewide, last year, more than 25,000 students from almost all of Vermont's elementary schools participated in this program co-sponsored by Mother Goose Programs/Vermont Center for the Book, the Vermont Department of Libraries, the Vermont Department of Education and Windham County Reads.  This link brings you to the most current Red Clover picks:  https://sites.google.com/a/etsd.org/essex-elementary-school-learning-center/red-clover-books-2012-2013  Ask your K-2 child which books Mrs. Wells has been reading.

Older students are being challenged to read DCF (Dorothy Canfield Fisher) books.  The DCF Award is Vermont's children's choice award for grades 4-8. After reading at least 5 books from the DCF Master List, students then vote for their favorite titles. The winning author is invited to visit Vermont to speak with children about the experience of writing.  Take a peek at the DCF blog for the most current picks. http://dcfbooks.edublogs.org/  Has your child checked out any of the DCF books?  What about a parent/child DCF bookclub???

Speaking of Books... Join us at Flynn this Thursday for a Pasta dinner and great book
shopping to benefit the library. The dinner price is very reasonable - $5/adults, $3/kids, under 5 are free, Family max $15. Doors open at 5:30.

Dinner Donations If you pledged a dinner donation for the pasta dinner, all non-perishables can be sent into the office through Thursday. Fresh items should be dropped off on Thursday morning. Thank you in advance for your generosity!  Please email the PTO if you have questions or forgot what you pledged - we can help!  flynnschoolpto@gmail.com

Learn More about Burlington's Food Services Posted October 31, 2012
All schools in the Burlington School District offer a full fruit and vegetable bar that is included with every lunch served. On average, 6-8 vegetables and 3-5 fruits are
featured. Students may take unlimited amounts of fruit and vegetables along with their entrée choice. Beans and legumes such as garbanzos, black bean and sweet potato salad, or lentils with roasted roots are also available on a daily basis. Vegetarian and vegan students may take unlimited amounts of these items to meet their daily protein needs. Students may also choose from vegetarian sandwiches including peanut butter and jelly, cheese and vegetables, or hummus wraps. At the K-8 level, hot entrées such as pizza and vegetable pasta are offered several times each month, while at the high school students may choose from hot vegetarian dishes daily. We feel that it is vitally important to offer a diverse menu to our increasingly diverse student body. Many students are new to this country, and it is important that they are offered food that is respectful of their religious and dietary customs. We believe that better food leads to better learning, and we want all students to go to class well fed and ready to learn. It is important to note that our schools have thousands of students and adults that are not vegetarian or vegan and they too need to have a culturally appropriate and varied menu.
It is equally important that as a dairy and agricultural state, we continue to support our farmers, our food system and maintain our working landscapes. We do this through local food purchases, farm and culinary programs for students, and ultimately the creation of a new school food culture. Food unites us all. Hunger affects us all. For more information, visit http://www.burlingtonschoolfoodproject.org/.

Bluebird BBQ  November 7th,  5-9pm
Come on out to Bluebird BBQ and chow-down on some of the best BBQ in the area.
10% of all food purchases for the evening go to the Burlington School Food Project's Farm-to-School program.  Please make reservations with Blue Bird BBQ and tell them that you're with BSFP.
(802) 448-3070  Thanks all and hope to see you there.

Ever Wonder about Allowance? Author Vickie Hoefle (Parenting on Track) writes: 11 Big Benefits of Giving Kids an Allowance

There’s little argument at this point that handling money as a child will prepare you for handling money as a young adult and eventually, as an adult. Great. But what exactly- as in literally- do the benefits look like? Why is is such a valuable commitment?

Imagine This First.  Well, imagine for a moment, that you have been giving your children money each week from the time they were four years old and each week they were encouraged to make decisions about the money. Imagine if you handed over the gift buying power, the junk food buying power, the cheap “crap” purchasing power, and so forth. Imagine if you allowed your child to experience the frustration when she didn’t have enough money to go out with friends, buy the perfect jeans or pay for her car payments. If you can imagine these lessons during childhood, you can imagine her respect for money heading into the real world.

The Benefits of Consistent Allowance (Why it’s worth the inconvenience of getting cash and handing it out!)

  1. Kids, at an early age learn the true value of money. As in, what can I buy for one dollar? $100?
  2. They discover what money can and can not do (happiness is not in the box you waited all month to buy, only to forget about a week later).
  3. They learn the “real” way how hard it is to save money and how easy it is to spend money.
  4. Kids develop a keen ability to assess what purchases are really important to them and which they can do without. (They’ll eventually say things like, NO. NOT WORTH IT… and walk away).
  5. Kids discover things about themselves- Am I a saver? Am I a spender? When will that benefit me? When will it not?
  6. Kids who buy their own things, DO NOT expect the adults around them to buy them stuff. In fact, they stop asking.
  7. Kids learn to negotiate, barter and work together. (i.e. If one kid only has 15 bucks and his brother pitches in five, you bet they come up with creative reimbursement plans!).
  8. Kids who carry their cash grow independent. There is no need to ask mom or wonder what she’ll say or how to sweet talk her (note: no fits because the answer is yes if the child has money). The child simply walks over, and decides if he wants to purchase or not.
  9. Kids who make mistakes with their money have learned the good old fashioned hard way money has value, it can go away and with time, you can earn it back– financial resiliency is valuable.
  10. Kids who spend enough time practicing also have time to understand- and make a judgement that sometimes, it’s ok to say– it’s only money- and there are things more important than a wad full of ones.
  11. And finally, as a result of their experience with money, kids develop a strong work ethic and an appreciation for everything you provide.
