Flynn PTO Update 3/26/12

Hey There Flynn Families - So nice to see so many families at the play- we are grateful for all your support!



Narnia had a great run this past weekend.  We packed the house both nights and our young actors did us proud!  I hope your child enjoyed the show and/or being part of the production.  Our Spring play is a much anticipated opportunity at Flynn.  Great parent support and successful fundraising help make it possible.  HUGE thanks to Sarah Smith for her calm leadership and successful grant writing skills.  I would also like to recognize some other volunteers who provided great leadership to Narnia:  Bella Nadworny for her costuming, Bren Alvarez for her beautifully executed playbill, Melisa Peterson and Jen DeBedout for managing the Greenroom.  We will be compiling a wrap-up report in the coming weeks and it will be made available to parents -stay tuned!

PTO Pizza Pickup today from 4:30-6! 

Hannaford Helps Schools netted us a check for $720.  Free money is fabulous!  Thank you families for turning in the grocery slips while shopping.  This is a yearly program, so look for it again in the Fall!

MORE THEATRE!!!  Hunt Middle School presents GREASE the musical (G rated version) on Friday, March 30th at 7pm and Saturday, March 31st at 4pm.

Admission to both shows is free. Playbills will be on sale for $5 and there will be a fully stocked concession stand. DVD's can be preordered at the event.

Please join them before the show on Friday for a homemade pasta dinner of penne, salad, bread and cookies from 5:30-6:30. On Saturday there will be a soup and chili dinner after the show. They will be serving hearty chicken noodle, vegetarian vegetable, chili, veggies and dip and brownies.

The price for both meals is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

All proceeds fund the Hunt Drama Program.  If you have a drama kid and they will go to Hunt in the next few years, come check out the play!  You will recognize many Flynn alums both in the cast and in the parent support team!

Flynn PTO Update 3/20/12

 Hey There Flynn Families - Kids and parents were working hard this past weekend building and painting sets for this week's production.  Hope you can make it to see Narnia this weekend!

JJ Flynn Theatre Presents NARNIA Friday, March 23rd @  7pm and Saturday, March 24th @ 4pm  - come see your favorite Narnia characters come to life on the Flynn School stage! There will be entertainment, goodies to purchase and affordable flowers to buy for your favorite actor/actress/singer - cheapest family entertainment in town - we promise, no wardrobe malfunctions!

Spring Bookfair - April 2-5  Opportunities galore to help out.  Can you help set up on Monday? Run a cash register on Thursday evening?  Help move books from  the Library to the multipurpose room on Monday?  Contact Alice Wells  at awells@bsdvt.org to sign up.

Burlington School Food Project We "heart" Vegetables!
Getting students to eat their vegetables is a constant battle. However, based on a CDC report put out earlier this year through Shelburne Farms and VT FEED, Vermont students are prone to consuming more vegetables that many kids in our country. Although this is dynamite news there still remains room to grow.  The Burlington School Food Project is always finding ways to urge our students to be adventurous in their food choices. We are constantly reaching out and trying new things. For us experiential learning is one of the best ways to get students more involved in their food.
Here is a list of some of our emerging project:

The Burlington High School Greenhouse - Earlier this year Mr. Brian Hoffman, a teacher of science at BHS, offered an unbeatable deal by granting us access to the department's greenhouse. This is a fully functional, glass structure, with automatic sprinklers and temperature sensitive vents. Basically a Farm 2 School dream. With help from Jenn McGowan and her Healthy City crew, as well as City Market volunteers we plan to have the place cleaned out and ready for an April planting. Our goal is to use this greenhouse space to grow healthy starts for all of our district's school gardens. Also by using this space as an educational tool teachers will be able to bring students onto the ground floor of food production. For me this is the most magical part of growing fruits and vegetables and I hope that this experience will cultivate new relationships between our students and their vegetables.

C.P. Smith Heritage Apple Orchard - C.P. Smith, having the space, sun-exposure and proper drainage has become the focal-point for our first ever district apple orchard. This orchard, with the support of principle Thomas Fleury, will house approximately fifteen apple trees of various heritage varieties. Apples play a big role in both the history and landscape of Vermont. Our intent is to offer a space that promotes the examination of both of these topics. In the spring we hope to: break ground, fill site with compost and plant a cover crop in order to ready the ground for tree planting next year. The learning that can be paired with this project is almost limitless.

Our vision includes: community harvest dinners, food-based education curriculum, district-wide field trips, taste-tests, pruning workshops, gardening classes, Vermont storytelling

Kingdom Creamery These delicious dairy products come from a family farm in East Hardwick, Vermont. Our schools will be partaking in their rich and flavor-filled non-fat yogurts.
Vermont Soy Company Finally! The USDA recognizes tofu as a source of protein. With that being the case we will now be able to experiment with recipes that include Vermont Soy Tofu

Flynn PTO Update 3/12/12

Hey There Flynn Families -

 Skating at Leddy Arena last Friday night was (as always) a huge success and a huge turnout. More than 87 Flynn families turned out to skate and socialize. Thank you to the PTO for making this a free event, thank you Shanta Eastman for organizing and thank you Tammy, Mary and Kate for taking a turn at signing families in. Happy to report that there were no major accidents and as far as I know, no trips to the emergency room. We had some local celebrities out with their own kids. Spotted skating was Mr. Abbey, Ms. Tinson and Mrs. Burdick! 


The March PTO meeting was last Thursday evening.  We've had great parent turnout and continue to plan and organize events to enrich the academic and social lives of your child and family.  It is never too late to get involved.  The minutes from the meeting will be available next week and the Treasurer's Report can be viewed by clicking on the following link:

Narnia is in full swing and both kids and volunteers are ramping up for a busy weekend including a set building day on Saturday (3/17) and Technical Dress rehearsal on Sunday (3/18) starting at 11:30.  We encourage parents and children grades 3+ to come help on Saturday after 8:30am.  Stay an hour or the whole day!  We will have food and drinks to keep you going and as always, fun projects and awesome folks to hang around with!  All actors/actresses need to be at school on Sunday by 11:30am with a bag lunch and a good attitude.  We will run through the whole play on stage and start to add in lights and music.  We'll add the chorus in on Monday and then it's PRODUCTION WEEK!

HELP!!!  We are looking to borrow 3 artificial Christmas trees to use on our set - Do you have one we can borrow or know someone who can help us out???  (grandparent perhaps???)  Please contact Sarah at sarah@esptrans.com - We can come get it!!!!!!

Flynn PTO Update 3/6/12

Hey There Flynn Families - Welcome back!                          Just before break 2nd grade parents showered Flynn staff with a week full of kid written tributes, breakfast goodies, flowers and munchies.  Thanks you to all the 2nd grade parents who prepared goodies and were able to help out - the staff certainly appreciated your thoughtfulness!

PTO Meeting this Thursday at 6:30pm in the Library.   As always, we provide free childcare!  The meeting agenda is included at the end of this post.  Never too late to try out a meeting - we rarely bite!

PTO (FREE) Skate Night is this Friday at Leddy Arena  All Flynn families are invited to skate for free from 6-8pm.  No skates?  No problem, we will cover that too!  (if you have your own skates, please bring them!!!)  The snackbar will be open for goodies.  Don't forget your gloves, hat and helmet if you have one!  All children must have an adult in attendance - no children will be admitted without a parent or other adult in charge.

PTO PIZZA NIGHT - ANOTHER FABULOUS SUCCESS!!

Thanks so much to Ramuntos Pizza in Williston and to all the wonderful parent volunteers and pizza buyers!!  We raised $176!!! All this money goes right back into enriching the lives of our students right here at Flynn!  How awesome is that?!?  The best part is that the PTO is doing a pizza night every month, so you can look forward to a non-cooking night and help your school at the same time!!!

The next PTO Pizza Pick Up Dates (say that fast!)are:  MARCH 27, April 17 and May 29- this will be the last one for the year and we will start again in Sept.

Narnia preparations are in full swing.  Practice will resume on Wednesday and students are asked to bring in their costumes this week.  A letter will be going home asking for some snack donations for production week.  Our kiddoes will be working hard during and afterschool this week and we plan to keep their energy high! Clear your social calendars for the week of 3/19 - between the technical dress rehearsal and final preparations for the shows, it will be an exhausting (and exciting!) week. 

Don't have a kid in the play???  Support your Flynn school family and come see the play Friday at 7pm or Saturday for the 4pm matinee!

Box Tops  Thank you to families for collecting and sending in Box Tops.  Denise Haggerty reports that the latest submission was for $152 - that is up $23 from the same time last year!  Keep sending them in and don't forget to keep them over the summer months!  Thanks Denise for your leadership and expansion of this program!

Flynn PTO Update 2/20/12

Hey There Flynn Families - We're on the homestretch to Winter break - Have a great week and a relaxing break!

Jeh Kulu--Traditional West African Music and Dance Flynn school came alive last week with the pulsing sound of West African drumming and excited primary children dancing.  Kids got a healthy cardiovascular work-out daily as they learned dance steps from Guinea, Mali, and Senegal from master artists.  Students danced with “smiles a mile wide”, according to principal Graham Clarke.

All K-2 students learned dance from Jeh Kulu artists and experienced the joy of vigorous daily exercise.  Sponsored by the PTO, the week-long artist-in-residency program was led by Jeh Kulu artists who also danced at two student performances on Friday, February 10.  This community-building event ended with parents, students, and teachers dancing to traditional rhythms together.  It was a fabulous evening for Flynn School!

Staff Appreciation for February is underway this week.  Thank you 2nd grade room parents for organizing.  Students will be creating thank you notes and cards while parents will be sending in a variety of breakfast/brunch type treats.  I often hear feedback from teachers about how much they enjoy our monthly celebrations.  Our teachers put great time and energy into our kiddoes - how nice that we can fete them regularly!

Narnia Update: We're all working hard, learning songs and lines, dance moves, organizing volunteer labor, selling ads/preparing the playbill and sewing costumes.  So far so good - we seem to be on a path towards producing a stellar show!  If you have a child in the show, ask them to show you some acting or singing techniques they are learning from Don and Ashley.  More than half the parents have already pledged to volunteer their time to help make the play a success.  There will be many opportunities during Production week to help afterschool and many roles to be filled in the greenroom helping the kids with costumes, make-up and general kid herding.  We need you too!  We will be reaching out to parents - if you have not yet volunteered for a task, we encourage you to contact us and we will help you find a job that fits your schedule and skills.  Email us at flynnschoolpto@gmail.com

Mark your calendars to come help at the Set Building day on March 17th  8:30am -?????  We will be at school all day painting, putting up the stage and preparing props - join us for a few hours or for the whole day - we will keep you fed and if it is anything like last year, we will have a great time!

Town Meeting Day is Tuesday, March 6th, but you don't have to wait for Election Day to vote! Please exercise your right and privilege to vote!

Hey There Flynn Families - Hope everyone has recovered from Superbowl madness...  Our fundraising team has been in overdrive this past week - check out all their/our success!  Thank you Tammy Kuypers for leading the charge!

PTO PIZZA NIGHT A FABULOUS SUCCESS!!  Thanks so much to Ramuntos Pizza in Williston and to the wonderful parent volunteers (especially Sarah Deshaw and Tammy Kuypers) who made the first PTO Pizza Night such a roaring success!  We raised $290!  All that money goes right back into enriching the lives of our students right here at Flynn.  How awesome is that?   The best part is that the PTO is doing a pizza night every month, so you can look forward to a non-cooking night and help your school at the same time!!!

The next Pick Up Dates are:

March 27
April 17
May 29- this will be the last one for the year and we will start again in Sept. :)

ZUMBA is offered every Saturday morning 9-10:15 at the Miller Center.  This past Saturday, instructor (and Flynn parent) Shannon Stem offered her class as a fundraiser for Flynn school.She had a packed class of regulars and another half dozen Flynn parents.  Shannon raised ~$150 for Flynn school and gave us a great workout to boot.   Give it a try - you just might like it!  Thank you Shannon for your enthusiasm and generosity!  
  
The February PTO meeting was productive and well-attended - the only thing missing was YOU!  Consider putting this on your bucket list!  I can't believe there is any TV programming on Thursday night that could trump the drama and intrigue of a PTO meeting - do come next month on March 8th!  Minutes are at the end of this post - thank you Sarah D.

Box Tops are collected year round for Flynn school - FREE, FREE money that we can access just by clipping off those pesky pieces of cardboard!  Denise will be sending in another batch in a few weeks - it will be the last submission until next Fall.   Send tops to the office or drop them yourself in the yellow bins located just inside the library.  But please, collect all summer and ask your friends and family to pass them to you as well - after all, who doesn't like/need FREE money?  Thanks you Denise for organizing!

Dr Frankowski spoke to parents about Adolescent Sexuality last Monday night at Hunt Middle School.  Unfortunately, there were very few 4th and 5th grade parents in attendance.  Despite what you think, it's coming....

Narnia is off to a great start.  There are daily rehearsals during lunch/recess and the 3rd grade chorus had their first session last week.  All cast will be getting CD's of the songs so they can sing along and get to know the tunes at home.  Parents will be pleased to hear a bunch of famous oldies that have been re-worded to fit Narnia.  Costume letters went home last week and families will be contacted by their costume leaders.  Costume donations should be pouring into the office to help off-set all the costume pieces being constructed.

P.T.O Meeting Minutes

February 2, 2012

Meeting was called to order at 6:30pm

Child care was offered in the stage gym

 School Budget Update- Bernie O’Rourke, A representative from the Burlington School Board, shared highlights from the 2012-2013 proposed budget.  Items mentioned, that were specific to Flynn, were the addition of permanent Para-Educators in all Kindergarten classrooms and the transferring of students during the phased construction to Flynn School- more information is available at:

Treasurer’s Report – reported by John Boone

•        Box tops brought in $267 dollars this period- Thank you to Denise Haggerty for continuing to coordinate this!

•        $800 added to the account from class photos

•        A motion was passed to grant $500 towards an upcoming Artist in Residence: Joseph Bruchac (an author of Abenaki descent who has published over 60 books) will be coming to Flynn and working with all grades over a 2 day period

Principal’s Corner – Graham Clarke

·        Successful professional development workshops were highlighted such as a recent workshop in classroom management that 14 Flynn teachers participated in and an ongoing math class that several teachers are taking with Sandy Stanhope from the Vermont Mathematics Institution

·        PBIS parent meeting on Monday, February 13th at 6:30pm

·        There will be conferences held in April this year (dates TBD)

·         There will be a picnic held at St. Josephs in May for families who will be moving to the new location during construction (dates TBD)

Enrichment Update– -Sarah Smith

•      Jeh Kulu will be coming this week (February 6-10).  There will be a daytime performance for K,1,2 families at 1:30 on the 10^th and an evening performance for 1,2 at (it was requested that families attend only 1 performance)

•      It was announced that there are still many volunteer opportunities for Narnia - more information available on the blog

Fundraising- Tammy Kuypers

•        PTO pizza kick-off raised $290- the plan is to continue this event on the last Tuesday of every month for the remainder of the school year

Room Parents/Staff Appreciation Update– Lisa Tulkop

•      February Teacher Appreciation will be a week full of breakfast foods

•      March will be provided by 1^st Grade and April by Kindergarten

School/Family Partnership Update– Shanta Eastman

•        Update was tabled until next month’s meeting

Open P.T.O Positions

•      Kate made another announcement about the need for a new 2012-13 President and provided job descriptions to the members present

Opportunities

•      Talent show help- contact Karen Carr

•      Family Nights – opportunities to help coordinate: Skate night (3/9) and Lego night (4/4)

•      Narnia volunteers needed: Selling Ads, Make-up, Front house, Volunteer coordinator

Open Forum

•      Heather Simmons shared an experience from the recent movie night where she had to stay with children who had been dropped off without supervision and alert police to a suspicious person on school grounds.  It was decided that a sign-in and further coordination of safety procedures should be enforced during family night events

•      Homework discussion was tabled until next month by Tammy Kuypers
